Chapter 1 What is DIN Connector?

DIN Connectors were originally brought into line in the 1970s. It is an electrical connector, and its architecture has multiple pins under a protective circular sheath. Normally, a full-sized DIN Connector contains three to 14 pins with a diameter of 13.2 millimeters.

The term Din connector doesn’t refer to a specific cable. Instead, it requires all the connectors that meet the Din standard.

The circular connector is another name for the Din Connector in computer electronics. It’s also used for a digital interface such as musical instrument digital interfaces MIDI.

Chapter 2: Standards of DIN Connectors

The term DIN connector doesn’t necessarily identify a certain type of connector unless a document number of the relevant standard is indicated. Below are some of the various standards of DIN connectors.

  • DIN 41524 – circular connectors commonly used for some digital signals or audio signals.
  • DIN 41612 – rectangular connectors commonly used to connect plug-in cards to a motherboard or backplane.
  • DIN 41585 – for automotive coaxial connectors.
  • DIN 41652 D – subminiature connectors commonly used for computer video and data.

Chapter 3: How Does The DIN Connector Work?

The plug has a round shielding metallic skirt that protects various round straight pins.

Each pin has a diameter of 1.45 mm and is equally apart (at 450, 600, 720, or 900) in a circle with a diameter of 7 mm.

The metallic skirt is keyed to protect the pins from damage and to ensure the connector is inserted in the proper orientation.

Also, the design ensures the shielding is coupled between the plug and socket before any signal connection path is made.

Regular DIN connectors

There are 7 common styles with different numbers of pins ranging between 3 and 8. Furthermore, there are three kinds of 5-pin connectors: domino/2700/3600, 1800, and 2400, based on the arc’s angle swept between its last and first pin.

There are two types of the 6-pin, the seven-pin (with the outer pins forming either 3600 or 3000) and the eight-pin (which has the outer pins at either 2620 or 2700).

However, there are some limits to compatibility. For instance, a 3-pin connector can connect to an 1800 5-pin socket using only 3 of the pins and not using the remaining two.

However, the same 1800 5-pin or 3-pin connector can connect to a 2700 8-pin or 7-pin socket.

About its mating

Furthermore, there are connectors with 14, 12, and 10 pins. A few high-level pieces of equipment use the 7-pin connector, where the two outer pins convey digital system data.

However, if the equipment connected was incompatible, you could unscrew the two outer pins in order for it to fit into a standard 5-pin 1800 socket without any data connections.

Since keying is the same among all connectors, this doesn’t totally prevent incompatible connectors from mating, which could result in damage.

However, this is different in the Hosiden type, incorrectly referred to as mini-DIN that keys with different connectors.

A few domino 5-pin connectors featured a keyway on the opposite side of the plug that enabled it to be reversed.

When used as a headphone connector, occasionally, the plug had a cut out in the body, which, depending on the way you inserted the plug, would allow an external speaker to switch on or off depending on what you want.

Inserting your plug one way would activate a switch on the socket’s periphery, switching your speakers off.

On the other hand, if you inserted the plug the other way, the switch wouldn’t activate as a result of the cut-out in the plug’s body.

About its polarity

Keep in mind that when you rotate the DIN headphone connector 1800, you reverse its polarity. Generally, this won’t affect your audio.

However, if you use an adapter that has a DIN male connector and various kinds of female headphone connectors, the negative connection of both channels joins.

This results in the audio becoming mono when you insert the DIN connector one way and stereo when you insert it the other way.

In order to avoid such scenarios and use headphones with devices featuring DIN headphone connectors and other devices, it’s best to mount a DIN connector permanently on your headphones and create an adapter to use different equipment with headphones featuring a DIN connector.

If you use it as a serial data connection, the receive and transmit lines might cross (however, the pinout used by Acron didn’t allow this).

You can also use screw look versions of DIN connectors in professional audio, instrumentation, and process control. Often, such variations are referred to as small Tuchel connectors.

Furthermore, configurations with as many as 24 pins are available in an identical shell size. Versions with bayonet locking rings were used on dictation machines, lighting dimmers, portable tape recorders, and other controls up to 1980.

Sometimes, the bayonet locking versions are referred to as Preh. Belling Lee introduced a variation with a spring-loaded collar that would latch on once inserted, but you had to pull back the collar to release its connector (just as the LEMO B series connector).

Chapter 4 Applications of DIN Connectors

There are two applications of Din Connectors.

1. Analog Audio

2. Other users

I.Analog Audio

AUDIO CONNECTORS encompass a great number of interfaces, including digital and analog. Their applications include home theatre and portable use to the pro audio mixing boards that DJs and professionals use. The similarity between most audio connectors is that they are easily connected.

The 3/180″ and 5/180″ connectors were originally systematized. European countries widely used them for connecting different audio equipment.

We can take an example of a stereo tape recorder. To connect the stereo tape recorder with a stereo amplifier, we use a pin DIN connector.

The din connectors are distinguished into two connectors, male and female connectors.

Male connector

The pins have their numbers on the male connector from right to left. We view them outside the connector, with five pins upward and facing them: (1-4-2-5-3).

Female connector

Holes on female connectors have their numbers from left to right, facing the holes: (1-4-2-5-3). A four-conductor cord wire in this way is sometimes called DIN lead, Din cable or DIN cord.

For mono interconnections, 3/180” plugs are enough.

II. Other users

Others use the 5/180,” which include:

i. SYNC or MIDI interface for electronic musical instruments.

ii. Peripherals or power connectors for personal computers.

iii. If you want to connect to controllers for radio-controlled model aircraft together for training purposes.

iv. Controlling tilt of UT MS antennas (Antenna Interface Standard Group)

The DIN connector has several other uses other than audio. It is particularly famous as a connector for various home computers and video games.

Chapter 5: The Benefits of the Application of DIN Connectors

DIN connectors play a big role in numerous electrical devices, like hydraulic machines, pneumatic devices, electromagnetic devices, and solenoid valves.

Also, they’re used in a number of electronic and electrical solutions like pressure transducers, proximity switches, low-energy motors, limit switches, and level sensors.

DIN connectors offer a number of benefits, including;

  • Simplified manufacturing process
  • Reduced inventory resulting in lower application costs
  • Improved product performance

Furthermore, DIN connectors adhere to a number of overvoltage protection requirements and are designed to function within a certain voltage limit.

Chapter 6 How to Custom DIN Connector Step By Step?

Step 1: DIN Connector–Finding a professional manufacturer

The first step is crucial. The quality of the product depends upon the manufacturer. If you want to have good quality and long-life products, finding a professional manufacturer is significant.

Manufacturing organisations tend to attract the attention of the general public the way airlines do. One only notices them when they’re late, when ticket prices rise, or when there’s a crash.

types of connectors

Switches, plugs, connectors are essential in our daily life. We need to connect to several things every day. The material of these things matters a lot as it can destroy the things connected to it.

It is better if someone contacts a well-known or trusted manufacturer who can make a good quality product.

Step 2: DIN Connector–Drawing confirmation

Making confirmation is very important as there are a lot of parasitic manufacturers.

successful people

Before buying a din connector, you need to confirm everything and double-check it in case of any misunderstanding.

Step 3: DIN Connector–Sign the contract

Sometimes a handshake is not enough; written papers are important, especially when you are buying or selling something.

confirmation letter

It is a rule in business deals to sign a contract before collaborating. If any big order signing a contract is just like making a promise which one shouldn’t break, it doesn’t mean you don’t sign during small orders. Everyone should sign a contract before paying money.

Step 4: DIN Connector–Sample confirmation

To get the correct order, you need to ask for the sample first. Don’t be afraid to ask the manufacturer for the sample; it is your right to ask him. A good manufacturer makes sure to satisfy its customers at any cost.

sample test

There have been many cases when people got the wrong order and manufacturers refused to pay it back, so one should be careful while ordering. The reliability of the manufacturer is critical.

Step 5: DIN ConnectorDelivery to customer

It is necessary to know the details of the product and the company manufacturing it. Whenever you order something, you need to know how long it will take, deliver to the customer, and charges and stuff. These are essential questions asked by a customer, and which they should answer honestly.

delivery service

It is important to find a good delivery service, and it’s most convenient if the company itself offers a delivery service.

Usually, it takes two to three weeks to make a connector, but it can take several months if you want to output it from the outside.
